Freestyle Portraits in Watercolor
Create Loose, Bold Portraits ... Freestyle!
We have had such fun painting loose watercolors in my last few classes, we’re going to continue painting loose, “freestyle” paintings in this class. This time we will concentrate on portraits!
Some of the most exciting portraits I have ever seen – portraits that perfectly capture personality – bend all the rules when it comes to using intense colors, blending pigments and capturing facial features without fine detail. In my experience as a teacher, developing a looser style is a common goal of many watercolor artists. No one has ever said to me they want “to tighten up.”
Painting loose watercolors allows this magical medium to do what it does best … flow on paper in unpredictable ways, surprising both artist and viewer alike. They are fun to look at, but they’re much more fun to paint!
So join me on January 10 for six weeks of “Freestyle Portraits!” Let’s explore what your own “freestyle” style might be. Reference images will be supplied, but bring your own if you like.
